THE LITTLE FRIEND REVIEW

I was walking by a book store and subconsciously, I decided to walk in and check for some books. Truthfully, I had no intention of buying but subconsciously, I found myself buying the book, ‘’the little friend - by Donna Tartt’’ .What attracted me to this particular book was the author Donna Tartt .Donna Tartt is an author, essayist and a critic. I have read a series of her books and I love them. My favourite of hers is The Secret History; I love the book so much. So when I bought this book ,I had absolutely no regret ,I even started reading it on the road and missed my route twice because I was focused on the book .It cost me much but out of the love and respect I have for Donna Tartt and her work, I didn’t mind.

Obviously, I expected I did have the same experience  I had with her other novels/story but  no, that wasn’t the case .Instead of intricate plotting ,beautiful  language and fascinating characters ,I got imbalance plotting ,vulgar language and disjoint characters .There was absolutely no form of intellectual energy in the whole book. There was no form of unity between the characters, the actions were not believable, and it was not realistic .Worst of all, there was no coherent conclusion.

Furthermore , what was really the importance of the story? It seems to me that she had no explicit idea of her story-line, what  main message was the book trying to pass? Tartt seem confused as most of the times, the story-line repeatedly contradicted itself. In my opinion, the story-line had no authentic message to pass, there was really no need involving certain characters  that  only appeared once or twice in the book that added no relevance to the movement of the story, as the only thing these characters  did was add to the volume and size of the book. Not forgetting the fact that violence and casual sex which disgusts me was being mentioned and encouraged consistently in the book. I got tired of the book ,the only thing that kept me till the end was the fact that I believed in Donna Tartt  and constantly , I kept hoping, perhaps at the end ,something would change and  I would be completely blown away  like always. I even had to read the book again, hoping I missed something, trying hard to understand and connect with the plot and characters of the story but there really was nothing to connect with, as all I saw was an empty space. I am deeply disappointed that Donna Tartt had to write like a toddler .I hope she does better ,come up with a good explanation and a better book .She made me believe she didn’t write The secret history or did someone else write The little friend ?  I really wished I had picked up another book at the store. I’ll advise you read the book for yourself and learn from the implicit mistakes.  Perhaps, it might be your type of novel, it certainly is not mine.
